[ARCHIVED] Hazardous Material Does Not Belong in Collection Carts

Republic Motor Oil ContaminationWe have been made aware of an incident that took place during regular collection in Elk River on Wednesday, May 11. A Republic Services driver found motor oil dripping from his truck, shown in the attached photo. Republic suspects that a resident placed used motor oil in their recycling container, which leaked and contaminated the entire load of collected recyclables.

The spill was properly cleaned up, however the entire load of recyclables is now contaminated. Motor oil is considered a hazardous material does NOT belong in trash or recycling containers. Oil, oil filters and antifreeze can be disposed of at the Elk River Compost Site, open to all Sherburne County residents with an access card.

Also, with the recent storms, please note branches and trees more than six inches in diameter are not allowed at the site, nor are large stumps and rocks/concrete. Be sure to review the full of accepted material before dropping off material by visiting ElkRiverMN.gov/compost.
