Many of us have lots of additional trash and recycling in our carts following the holidays, and with today’s snowfall it’s a good time to remind residents of proper container placement to ensure both your items are picked up for collection, and city plows are able to efficiently clear the city of snow and ice.
City code requires carts be placed in your driveway, one foot back from the curb line, and not in the street or right-of-way. There’s no need to worry about large snowbanks by your driveway. Refuse trucks have telescoping arms that can reach your container over three feet into your driveway.
Unfortunately, these arms aren’t super coordinated, so place your containers at least three feet apart from one another on days of dual trash/recycling collection. Be sure to have your carts out by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day as well, staffing shortages have caused changes in routes and pickup schedules, so please be aware.
Also, when clearing your own driveway, do not blow or shovel snow into the street. This creates challenges for your neighbors, motorists, refuse collection and more, especially if your street has already been cleared.
