Tis the season for garage sales, graduation parties, seasonal business advertising, homes for sale, and so much more! And with those things – often comes signs placed in the city right-of-way. If you’d like to save your sign from being removed by Elk River Code Enforcement staff for illegal placement, here are a few things you need to know:
- Signs cannot be placed in the right-of-way. City right-of-way is 10 feet from the curb or street edge.
- Signs cannot be attached to existing objects within the right-of-way, including telephone poles, streetlights, or sign posts (like stop signs or street signs for example).
- Signs cannot be placed in the median of a divided roadway, in the center of a roundabout, or on sidewalks/boulevards.
Temporary signage placed in the right-of-way can be unsightly, but it can be dangerous as well, encroaching on the line-of-sight for motorists and pedestrians. Signs removed by Code Enforcement staff are left in a bin outside of the Elk River Compost Site, located at 19000 Proctor Road. We don’t want your signs, but we do want to keep the right-of-way clear. Keep in mind, the bin is accessible to everyone, so if your sign is a good one, it may not stay there long!
