Spring is a time when yard and home clean ups are in full swing, however we cannot stress this enough – just because it’s material that comes from Mother Earth, doesn’t mean it’s accepted at the Elk River Compost Site. Recently, a large amount of debris was dumped at the site, including shrubbery with roots, dirt/rock still attached, and stumps. There was also other trailer loads of dirt, rocks and concrete.
These items cannot be chipped and are not removed by our vendors. As the site fills with illegal material, less space is available for acceptable material. Further, the illegally-dumped material must by sorted and transported to the landfill for disposal at taxpayer cost.
Accepted items include yard waste (grass clippings, leaves), sod, brush and branches (six inches in diameter or less). If you have a shrub, cut it off above the root and bundle it like you would brush in order for it to be considered accepted material.
Please help us continue to operate the Elk River Compost Site by reviewing the list of accepted items found at ElkRiverMN.gov/CompostSite and by reporting illegal dumping to the Elk River Police Department by calling 763.635.1200.
