Public Works crews have been canvasing the city this week, working to clear snow and ice from storm drains in an effort to get ahead of any localized flooding as temperatures rise and snowpack depletes. Residents can help by checking neighborhood storm drains regularly and clearing away any accumulated buildup on the drain itself and along the curb line leading to the drain. Please use caution when clearing these areas yourself.
If you are unable to clear a storm drain or need to report standing water across a roadway call 763.635.1120, or log on to the city’s website and fill out the “Stormwater, Drain, Pond or Street Flooding Concern” form located at ElkRiverMN.gov/FloodingConcern.
A few other tips to help protect structures from water include: checking your sump pump to ensure it is functioning properly, shoveling snow away from your home’s foundation, removing snow from your roof in an effort to keep gutters clear, and implementing barriers such as sandbags to protect low openings.
