[ARCHIVED] Snow Removal

snow_plough_at_night_thumb.jpg

The city plows 174 lane miles, 20+ public parking lots and 220 cul-de-sacs. The miles are divided into eight sections with one truck assigned to each route. For safety and convenience, major streets are plowed first, then secondary and residential streets. Please know the crews are working as efficiently as possible to help maintain safe roads throughout the city. The crews plow all hours during snow events and work hard to get residential and downtown streets cleared before normal business hours.

Residents/property and business owners are responsible to remove snow and ice from sidewalks fronting their property within 24 hours after snow has stopped. If the snow/ice has not been cleared to the full width of the sidewalk within the twenty four (24) hour period, city crews can remove it and expenses incurred will be forwarded to the property owner. NO PRIOR NOTICE WILL BE GIVEN.

Minnesota Statute §160.27 prohibits plowing, shoveling, blowing, or placing snow onto public roadways. Depositing snow in any fashion onto a public street, right-of-way, or highway is illegal and punishable as a misdemeanor. This civil liability may extend to both the property owner and the person who actually placed the snow on the roadway/right-of-way.

The City of Elk River asks all citizens to comply with these rules which are designed to keep the streets, right-of-ways, and highways safe during the winter months.

Thank you for your cooperation!
