Governor Tim Walz has issued a Writ of Special Election to fill the vacant Minnesota House of Representatives District 30A seat following the recent resignation of Rep. Nick Zerwas. House District 30A represents portions of Wright and Sherburne counties.
The candidate filing period to fill the vacant seat opened on Tuesday, December 3 and runs through 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10. Prospective candidates who wish to run can file for the election through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office or the elections office in the auditor/treasurer’s department of the county in which they reside. More information on candidate filings can be found here.
Given that two Republican candidates (Paul Novotny and Kathy Ziebarth) have already filed for the seat, a special primary election will likely be held on Tuesday, January 14 to reduce the number of candidates from each party in the special election down to one. Candidates have until 5:00 p.m. on December 11 to withdraw their candidacy so while it’s likely we will have a primary; it’s not definite at this time. The special election itself will be held Tuesday, February 4.
