On Saturday, May 11, the YMCA of Elk River is offering a free class on mental health first aid. This important class introduces the risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders, builds an understanding of the impacts that can accompany mental illness and reviews common support options. The eight-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connects people to the appropriate professional, peer, social and self-care help. It is open to anyone interested in increasing their mental health literacy and skills. You do not need any background knowledge of mental illness to attend. Please note this class may be too basic for those who work in mental health services. Contact hours are available.
This class, valued at $170 per person, is sponsored and funded by the Elk River YMCA and Fairview Community Health.
