Each Memorial Day, Elk River American Legion Post 112 has hosted a ceremony at Lion John Weicht Park. Due to the demolition of the band shell at Lion John Weicht Park, the Legion reserved Rivers Edge Commons Park for the event.
Rivers Edge Commons, like every other city park with the exception of Lion John Weicht Park, does not have a flag pole. The city currently only maintains and displays American flags near municipal buildings and in downtown Elk River. The local American Legion Commander’s request for a flag pole was forwarded to the Parks and Recreation Commission for consideration. The Commission, a group of citizen volunteers responsible for advising the Council on issues pertaining to the management and development of city parks and trails, carefully considered several factors regarding a flag pole at Rivers Edge Commons and other parks before deciding against the installation of a flagpole at Rivers Edge Commons Park at this time. The Commission did ask to revisit the topic at a later date as they believe a larger discussion is needed regarding city policy pertaining to flags and locations in our 41 city parks.
