According to the National Fire Protection Association, July is the peak month for grill fires, resulting in 9,600 structure fires, 16,600 trips to the emergency room, and more than $30 million in damage. Last weekend, Elk River Fire Department responded to several grill fires, prompting this friendly reminder to practice good BBQ habits by following the tips below:
- Unattended cooking is the leading cause of grill fires – never walk away from your BBQ
- Keep a 3-foot safety zone around your grill (away from all structures, deck railings, eaves, and landscaping)
- Check the gas tank hose for leaks often by applying soap and water to the hose and looking for bubbles
- Open your gas grill before lighting it
- Clean grill after each use to remove grease that can increase fire dangers
- Places coals from a charcoal grill in a metal can with a lid once they’ve cooled
- Keep a fire extinguisher within reach
