[ARCHIVED] Parks and Recreation Survey Results

Results from the needs assessment survey that were randomly mailed to 3,100 residents in March indicate that Elk River residents are highly satisfied with the city’s Parks and Recreation System. They place a high priority on the trail system with a strong desire for connections to city parks, trails, and schools.

The survey is one segment of the overall master planning process that is currently underway. The plan will identify the vision for the future of Parks and Recreation and guide how to get there.

The most popular activities for residents are the following, in order:
Swimming was a favorite family time activity, especially during the summer months but based on written comments, many families are willing to drive outside Elk River for a quality aquatic water park experience.

Results showed Woodland Trails Park as the most used facility in the Elk River park system followed by the city’s various athletic complexes (Oak Knoll, Dave Anderson (formally Orono), and Youth Athletic Complex).

The recreation facility that is most lacking according to the survey is an outdoor pool with spray features. Although trails are the most popular activity, they are also an area that is lacking and can be improved.

Indoor activities/facilities that residents are most interested in are:
Running track
Climbing wall
Field house

The public is invited to participate in the master planning process by attending a community open house. The meeting is an opportunity for the public to review the survey findings and the input gathered from the various focus groups sessions that took place from March through May. During this meeting, residents can also provide input on preliminary approaches for parks, trails, athletics, facilities, public art, and more.

Public input will help shape the plan which will be developed throughout the summer. The open house will take place 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at City Hall. To keep up to date on information, visit
