Advisory groups play an essential role in city government. The City Council is supported by various specialized advisory groups who focus on specific issues, like planning and economic development.
After studying the issues, these groups make recommendations to the City Council. Sometimes the City Council will approve the recommendations of the group, but at other times, these decisions will only be one of many factors the Council must weigh when making a final decision.
Consider Joining our Heritage Preservation Commission

Do you have an investigative mind?
Do you like to do research?
If you said yes to these questions, then you should consider joining our Heritage Preservation Commission. The Commission reviews and makes recommendations to the City Council on issues pertaining to the historical, archaeological, engineering, and cultural heritage of the City of Elk River. They also participate in the preservation and acquisition of Elk River’s heritage and historical sites. Recent projects included the painting of the Jackson Street Water Tower and a documentary on the history of Elk River.
The Heritage Commission meets on the third Thursday of January, March, May, July, September, and November with additional meetings held on an as-needed basis. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. and are held at Elk River City Hall. Elk River residency is a requirement to serve on the Heritage Preservation Commission.
