Memorials and Tributes
The Elk River Parks and Recreation Department welcomes donations that help us enhance our parks and open space with items the department might not otherwise be able to afford. People may make contributions to community reforestation efforts, and receive a personalized medallion - in memory of a friend or loved one when giving a memorial tree or you can donate a tribute bench that has an engraved plaque.
A tree planted in someone's memory is a living tribute that benefits present and future generations.
A tribute bench allows your loved one’s memory to live on in an act of service to our city parks. Your contribution will be a great enhancement to many people’s quality of life.
Donors receive the gratification of giving a meaningful and unique gift to someone special that makes a positive and lasting impact on the environment. Order online.
In addition, donors will receive:
- A medallion and certificate that is suitable for framing.
- A Charitable Tax Receipt for the full amount of their donation.
Tree Selection: Tree species will depend on the park. Staff will assist in identifying a suitable tree for the desired placement area. The size will be based on the city landscaping ordinance. Placement location is at the sole discretion of city staff and is based on park use and maintenance. Preferred tree sizes are 8-12 feet tall and approximately two inches in diameter.
Commemorate a loved one or friend with a tribute bench in their favorite park. Each bench is installed on a concrete pad, with an affixed plaque with the wording of your choosing. Order online.
Please note the following locations are at capacity:
- Rivers Edge Commons Park
The cost for each bench is $2,800. This includes the bench, installation, and a commemorative plaque. Benches are installed at approved sites in the order requests are received.
The city has sole discretion regarding the placement of new benches. Bench placements shall coincide with master plans or renovation of parks.
Bench Design: Memorial benches have a standard design (pictured). On occasion, the bench design may differ if it is a newly installed bench as a part of a park redesign or planning project.
Installation Season: Benches and plaques are installed between April and October, weather permitting.
Bench Terms: The guaranteed term of a tribute bench is ten years. Bench installation and maintenance will be handled by the Parks and Recreation Department staff. After ten years, the bench will no longer be guaranteed or maintained.
