Campaign Signs

Freedom of expression is abundant during the political campaigning season. Many people like to express their support for particular candidates.

Political signs of any size are permitted anywhere in the city on private property with the permission of the property owner. Signs are not allowed in public right-of-way. Many people don’t realize where public right-of-way is located. Public right-of-way varies on city roads. Highway right-of-way varies even more. A general rule of thumb is to keep signs at least 10 feet from the curb, edge or a shoulder. Make sure any signs installed on your property are located outside of this right-of-way. The law applies to all roads. State and local road workers will remove any illegal signs. Any campaign signs removed by the City of Elk River will be taken to the Public Works Garage located at 19000 Proctor Road and can be picked up anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
