Staff and Building
The Fire and Building Safety Division, under the direction of the building official, oversees all residential and commercial building, mechanical, plumbing, fire alarms/sprinklers and housing rental permits issued in the city limits. The Minnesota Building and Fire Codes are enforced and adhered to on all permits. It is illegal to begin work on most projects, without a permit. Some exceptions to this requirement are listed in the building code. Obtaining a permit either by a homeowner and /or contractor insures safety as well as full compliance with the Minnesota State Code.

The Fire and Building Safety Department staff responsibilities include:
  • Review and approve construction plans and complete on-site inspections during the construction process to ensure compliance with applicable building and fire safety codes
  • Minimize the risk of danger through fire and building safety code compliance, planning and inspections

With the number of rental properties increasing across the city, staff, through the rental housing inspection program, work to protect the interests of both property owners and renters.
